The National Medical Commission (NMC) has decided to discontinue postgraduate diploma medical courses across India, paving the way for a complete shift to MD and MS programs in specialized medical education. Admission to PG diploma courses will be done for the last time in 2026-27, and after that, admission to these programs will be no more. This is the beginning of a major transition in the realm of specialized medical education. According to an official notice from the commission, the academic year 2026-27 will mark the end of admissions for postgraduate diploma courses. After this, admission to PG degree programs will not be allowed in the academic year 2027-28.It is one of many initiatives to make a more consistent system of postgraduate medical education. By moving fully to specialized degree education, NMC hopes to make academic standards even higher.
Major change in postgraduate medical education
Postgraduate degree programs have served as a way through which doctors could obtain specialized training for decades. However, the NMC reached a decision that degree courses should be used as the main way to obtain additional training in medicine.According to the commission, many medical colleges already have the capacity to offer MD/MS programs because of their infrastructure, workforce, patients and clinical facilities. It has therefore become easy for the institutes to convert their diploma seats into diploma seats. It is believed that the change will allow a better use of resources by institutions while offering specialized training at the same time.
Medical colleges can convert degree seats
To ensure a smooth transition, the NMC has allowed medical colleges currently offering diploma courses to apply for the conversion of these posts into corresponding MD or MS programs.Applications will be processed through the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), one of the key regulatory bodies under the NMC. Colleges will be required to submit applications through an online system. The commission said that a dedicated application portal and detailed timings will be announced separately. The conversion process is expected to help institutions update their academic offerings without requiring a completely new framework.
Decision rooted in previous regulations
The latest announcement is not an isolated policy change. It follows the provisions already included in the Postgraduate Medical Education Regulations (PGMER) 2023.Under these regulations, medical colleges were allowed to seek the conversion of diploma seats into degree seats. The rules also made it clear that new proposals to start new degree courses or increase existing degree seats will not be considered. The latest notification now sets a clear deadline and lays down a path for complete elimination of degree admissions.
End of an era
Once the new policy is fully implemented, postgraduate degree courses will no longer admit students in India. Specialized medical education will move entirely toward MD and MS programs. The reform is expected to bring more uniformity to postgraduate medical qualifications and could influence how future generations of doctors receive specialist training. As medical colleges prepare for the transition, the announcement signals the NMC’s intention to create a more standardized and degree-focused medical education system for years to come.
