Prince Harry’s much-anticipated reunion with King Charles III is unlikely to facilitate the repair of his fractured relationship with Prince William, according to multiple royal experts assessing dynamics within the royal family. The Duke of Sussex plans to visit the UK in July with his wife Meghan Markle and their two children, their first family trip to the UK since 2022.However, Page Six reported on Monday that royal commentators remain pessimistic about the chances of the brothers reconciling during the visit. Amanda Matta, co-host of the podcast “Off With Their Headlines,” told the publication that it’s too early to call time on a potential reconciliation between Harry and William at this stage.
Amanda Matta on Prince William and Prince Harry’s ‘most tense’ relationship
Matta described the relationship between William and Harry as the “most tense” of all the current family dynamics in the royal family. She pointed to William’s current position within the royal family as a complicating factor in any potential reconciliation efforts.Matta explained to the publication: “William has also recently sought to demonstrate strength and leadership, which has often resulted in press conferences expressing his opposition to the king’s handling of emotionally charged issues such as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and now Harry’s potential return.”In Matta’s assessment, the path to reconciliation will require William to take a different approach than in recent years. “In order for the brothers to make peace, William needs to approach this issue pragmatically rather than emotionally,” she said. “That’s a bit contrary to King Charles’s approach. William has been adamant for years that Harry’s betrayal is inexcusable.”
Emily Nash on Prince William and Prince Harry’s unlikely reunion
Royal correspondent Emily Nash took a similarly cautious view on the possibility of a meeting between the brothers during Harry’s visit. “I certainly don’t expect anything to happen on this visit,” Nash told the media, although she acknowledged there could be unexpected developments.Nash said it would take certain circumstances for William and Harry’s reunion to happen. “If it was part of a wider family gathering, they might be in the same place at the same time. But, you know, given the very rocky relationship between William and Harry, I don’t think they’re going to be in a rush to spend time together now that Harry’s back in the UK,” she said.Regarding King Charles’ potential role in brokering reconciliation between his two sons, Nash said the reigning monarch appears to be focused on his own goals. “I think he’s probably just focused on spending time with his son, whom he hasn’t seen in a long time, and especially the possibility of meeting his grandchildren. I’m sure that’s probably his main focus right now,” Nash said.
Necessary conditions for reconciliation
Matta suggested a private meeting between William and Harry would be a meaningful indicator of progress. “If there were to be a private meeting between William and Harry, it would be a clear signal that lines of communication are being reopened,” she said. However, Nash warns against expecting rapid changes in family dynamics. “These things have to happen step by step. When things are as difficult and alienating as that family has been, I don’t think things are going to change overnight,” the reporter noted.

The move marks a fundamental change in the family’s stance in the public eye since Harry and Meghan lost their security clearance after stepping down from royal duties in 2020.The upcoming visit is an opportunity for King Charles to spend time with his youngest grandchildren and motivation to stay connected with his younger son, knowing the pressures that exist within large families.
