A dispute over examination security checks in a National Entrance Eligibility Test (NEET) re-examination center in Ahmedabad briefly spread out of the venue on Sunday, drawing protests from parents and police intervention. The incident took place at the RJ Tibrewal Commerce College in Vastrapur, one of Gujarat’s 211 centers for the NEET retest conducted after the controversy surrounding the exam earlier this year.
The dispute began during security screening
According to officials and eyewitnesses, the situation started when a female candidate wearing a hijab was subjected to a security screening before entering the examination center. The applicant’s mother objected after the garment was temporarily removed during the control process. She argues that her daughter should be allowed to appear in the exam while wearing the hijab. After discussions involving exam officials, the university principal and police personnel, the student was allowed to enter the center wearing the religious habit.
Parents raise objections
The decision led to the objections of some parents present in the place. They questioned whether exam rules were applied uniformly and claimed that students wearing Hindu religious symbols, such as sacred threads, necklaces and bracelets, had been asked to remove them during the search. As the discussions intensified, groups of parents gathered outside the center and raised slogans demanding equal enforcement of the examination guidelines.
The police restore order
The situation became tense after members linked to Bajrang Dal and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has also arrived at the location. Reports of a minor scuffle followed before police intervened.Assistant Commissioner of Police Jayesh Bhrambhatt said officials intervened to prevent the situation from escalating.“Members of various organizations had gathered in the center, and the situation was controlled after the intervention. The students were asked to remove some religious articles during the checks as part of the standard procedure,” he said. IANS.The police removed several individuals from the venue and carried out crowd control measures.Officials said the candidate was allowed to take the exam and the test continued normally at the center despite the tension outside.NTA had put in place strict security arrangements for the NEET re-examination, including multi-layer search and identity verification.Police later appealed to the public not to circulate unverified claims on social media and said law and order would remain under control during the investigation process.(with agency inputs)
