Munna Bhai 3 not shelved, Rajkumar Hirani talks biggest hurdle: ‘It needs to meet the standards we already have’

Fans have been eagerly awaiting his return for nearly two decades. Sanjay DuttMuna and Arshad Warsicircuit. While speculations surrounding the fate of Munna Bhai 3 have surfaced over the years, the filmmakers Rajkumar Hirani Actor Arshad Warsi has now clarified that the project is very much alive and is still in active development.According to Hindustan Times, the duo revealed during the promotions of their upcoming streaming project “Pritam and Pedro” that the problem was not a lack of creativity but finding the perfect story that would carry on the legacy of the series.

Rajkumar Hirani continues to search for the right story

The journey of this much-loved franchise started with Munna Bhai MBBS in 2003, followed by the hugely successful Lage Raho Munna Bhai in 2006. Both films earned critical acclaim and built loyal fan bases, making expectations for the third installment exceptionally high.Rajkumar Hirani admits that coming up with new ventures for Munna and Circuit was never a difficult task. The challenge, he believes, is to create a narrative that is equally compelling from beginning to end.Explaining the reason for the delay, he said, “If you only want to watch Munna Bhai before the intermission, I can do five films now. Because after that I have no story.”

Why Rajkumar Hirani refuses to rush for sequel

Despite knowing that the third installment will generate huge excitement at the box office, Hirani insists that commercial success alone is not a reason to make another film in the series.“Honestly, I’d like to make one. Anyone in my position would probably say, ‘Just write any script and it’ll be a huge box office hit and make a decent amount of money.'” But I didn’t want to do that. We made two great movies; if all I cared about was the money, I’d have made four or five versions of it by now. It needs to at least meet the standards we already have. That’s where I got stuck,” he said. The filmmaker emphasized that maintaining the quality established by the first two films remains his top priority.

Arshad Warsi reveals three scripts already exist

Contrary to popular assumptions that the project lacks a script, Arshad Warsi revealed that multiple versions of the story have already been written.“There are actually three almost unfinished scripts out there. Those three scripts are literally better than most scripts I’ve ever heard – I’m not kidding. Each script has elements that grab your attention right away. The ideas and scenes in them are absolutely beautiful,” he shared.According to Warsi, each draft had strong emotions and dramatic moments, but each still lacked the key elements needed to complete the narrative. Ashad further explained that the development process has stalled as the writers are looking for a perfect solution to tie everything together.“It’s just a tiny connection missing, a small piece of the jigsaw puzzle. Once it’s in place, we’re good to go. Otherwise, the ending is missing somewhere, or doesn’t connect smoothly. Eventually, he will find it. ” he added. The actor remains confident that Hirani will eventually crack the formula and bring a worthy continuation to the series.Gandhigiri’s unexpected successDuring the conversation, Hirani also reflected on how some of the series’ most iconic moments became cultural phenomena without any deliberate planning.“You don’t sit back and think, ‘People will remember Jadu ki Japi or Gandhigiri.’ If you start writing like that, it becomes very manipulative,” he said. The director recalls that the team had believed that another dialogue in “Lage Raho Munna Bhai” would be well-received by the audience. However, Gandhigiri’s concept unexpectedly resonated across the country and became part of popular culture.“We had a song in which Lucky Singh, a corrupt builder, had to adapt to Gandhigiri. We wrote a line where Munna and Circuit told him, ‘Whatever you normally do in life, do the opposite of it.’ We used that line several times in the film and thought it might become a popular catchphrase. To this day, I don’t think anyone remembers that conversation! On the other hand, we thought the word Gandhigiri might not catch on, but it became a huge phenomenon. You just write with your gut and that’s it,” he recalls.

Arshad’s hilarious memories from tour

One of the lightest moments of the discussion came when Arshad Warsi revealed that he barely remembered his performance after the project was completed.“I literally forgot about my work immediately after the shoot. Raju knew that in ‘Munna Bhai 2’ (‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’), I had no idea how I was acting! They had to show me the tape of the first film and say, ‘Son, look, your performance is like this’, and then I had to imitate myself,” he joked. His candid confession amused everyone and exposed his relaxed style.

Still hopeful for Muna and Circuit’s return

Although Munna Bhai 3 is yet to go into production, Hirani confirmed that discussions are ongoing with Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi and screenwriter Abhijat Joshi. The team continues to explore ideas while looking for the final ingredient that will elevate the film to the level audiences expect.Hirani ended on an optimistic note, assuring fans that these beloved characters have not been abandoned.“At some stage this is definitely going to happen,” he said. For now, the wait continues, but the creators insist that Munna Bhai 3 is far from shelved and could finally reunite one of Hindi cinema’s most popular on-screen duos.
