Lightning forces FIFA to suspend match
The decision to suspend play was prompted by dangerous lightning activity being detected near the stadium during half-time.Under protocols adopted across the U.S., play must stop whenever lightning or electrical discharge is detected within an eight-mile radius of a venue. Once that threshold is reached, players, officials and staff must leave the pitch, while supporters are directed to shelter areas within the stadium.As the storm intensified over Philadelphia, fans who battled heavy rain for much of the first half either grabbed ponchos or headed to the concourse area. Soon after, screens in the stadium instructed spectators to vacate their seats and move to protected areas of the venue.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the area just before 7 p.m. ET, with forecasts calling for wind gusts approaching 60 mph as the storm system moves through the city.
A disruption that was anticipated before the game started.
The threat of severe weather was affecting preparations long before the opening whistle.Hours before tipoff, stadium officials advised fans not to travel to Lincoln Financial Field because of hazardous conditions in the area. The gate opening was delayed as heavy rain, thunder and lightning swept through Philadelphia in the afternoon.Lincoln Financial Field issued a statement on social media warning supporters: “Due to severe weather in the area, gate opening will be delayed.”“If you are not in the area, please do not travel to Philadelphia Stadium at this time,” the statement continued.“If you are near Philadelphia Stadium, please take shelter.”Later in the day, conditions improved and the gates were opened, allowing the game to start as scheduled at 5pm local time. However, the weather never really improved and eventually escalated into the first major meteorological disturbance of the event.
How FIFA’s weather delay system works
The review also provides the clearest example yet of the extensive severe weather planning being developed by FIFA and local authorities for the 2026 World Cup.The governing body has repeatedly stressed that it works with weather agencies and emergency management departments in all 16 host cities. Last month, FIFA said its emergency preparedness team had carried out comprehensive drills across the tournament, specifically targeting severe weather conditions.Under current regulations, a countdown begins once lightning is detected within eight miles of the stadium. There are then no further lightning strikes within that radius for 30 minutes before play resumes.Any additional strikes immediately reset the clock.After the final 30 minutes, players have 15 minutes to warm up before play restarts.

Reports from Philadelphia said the countdown kept restarting and delays had exceeded the minimum 30-minute threshold as new lightning strikes continued to be detected around the stadium.
