Cape Verde’s stunning debut at the 2026 FIFA World Cup reached another historic milestone on Friday when the Blue Sharks qualified for the last 32 despite drawing all three group games. A 0-0 draw with Saudi Arabia, coupled with Spain’s 1-0 victory over Uruguay, the new African army was enough to advance as second place, behind Group H champion Spain.The achievement completes one of the most incredible stories in the tournament. The island nation, with a population of just over 500,000, is participating in its first World Cup, advancing from a group with former world champions Spain and Uruguay to become the smallest nation ever to reach the knockout stages of a men’s FIFA World Cup.
Three draws, one historic promotion
Cape Verde went into the final game of Group H knowing promotion was just around the corner, but their fate would depend on simultaneous events in Guadalajara.The Blue Sharks have already exceeded expectations, frustrating Spain in a goalless draw before coming back to draw 2-2 with Uruguay. Another point against Saudi Arabia would take them to three points, but advancement depends on Spain avoiding defeat to Marcelo Bielsa’s side. Cape Verde once again produced a disciplined defensive performance to hold Saudi Arabia to a 0-0 draw while nervously awaiting news of another match. Shortly after the final whistle, Spain defeated Uruguay 1-0. The result sparked huge celebrations from Cape Verde’s players, coaching staff and supporters, with many hugging each other and shedding tears when promotion was official.

The reward for their extraordinary group stage performance comes in the round of 32 on July 3 against defending world champions Argentina in Miami.
A feat accomplished by only three countries
Cape Verde drew in all three group matches and went on to advance, becoming one of the most statistically unique clubs in World Cup history.They became the fourth country to advance to the knockout rounds after drawing all three group games. Before Cape Verde, this feat could only be achieved by:

- Republic of Ireland(1990)
- Cape Verde(2026)
Cameroon also drew three matches on their World Cup debut in 1982 but failed to qualify, while New Zealand suffered the same fate in their second World Cup appearance in 2010 after drawing three matches.Cape Verde’s achievements go beyond this unique record. They are also the first country to advance from the group stages of their first World Cup since Slovakia accomplished the feat in 2010, and the first to go unbeaten in the group stages since Senegal’s memorable performance in 2002.
Woznia delivers another heroic performance
Cape Verde’s success has been largely down to the outstanding performances of veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, whose tournament has made him one of the emerging stars of the World Cup.

The 40-year-old performed well again against Saudi Arabia, keeping a clean sheet. He first collected a dangerous header with ease to keep out Mohamed Kanno’s shot in first-half stoppage time and then made a superb diving save to keep out Mohamed Abu Shamat’s shot in the 66th minute. He made one last crucial save in stoppage time to keep out Abdullah Hamdan’s shot in the 92nd minute, with eligibility still on the line.

The veteran’s performances throughout the tournament earned him global attention, helping him amass more than 16 million followers on Instagram during his historic campaign in Cape Verde.His mother, Ana Candida Évora, proudly watched from her luxury suite, waving a small Cape Verdean flag throughout the game. It was her second World Cup as visa issues prevented her from witnessing her son’s memorable seven-save performance against Spain earlier in the group stage.
From outsider to World Cup giant killer
Before the World Cup began, few had given Cape Verde any real chance of surviving a group that included Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia. Instead, the Blue Sharks went undefeated in the opening stages while becoming one of the biggest stories in the tournament after frustrating one former world champion and denying another.Spain topped Group H with seven points after beating Saudi Arabia and Uruguay after drawing with Cape Verde in the first round. The Blue Sharks continue their historic adventure with three points in second place, beating Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.Their next challenge will be defending world champion Argentina. On paper, Messi’s side will start as overwhelming favourites, but Cape Verde have proven throughout the tournament that reputation alone means little once the competition begins.
