India posted a score of 189/7 in the first T20I at Chester-le-Street thanks to half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma and skipper Shreyas Iyer, but the match was eventually called off due to heavy rain.
Samson faces increasing pressure
Sanju Samson comes into the second T20I and is attracting increasing attention. The wicketkeeper-batsman managed just seven runs in his first match and didn’t look comfortable at the crease.
With teen star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi waiting in the wings, Samson knew he couldn’t afford too many defeats. The 15-year-old has already generated a lot of excitement and another poor performance from the experienced opener is likely to intensify the clamor for his selection.
Samson’s biggest challenge is consistency. While he had memorable game-winners, they were often followed by a string of low scores. His difficulties against the moving ball were evident during the Ireland series, with the pacers exposing his skills on the seam track on several occasions.
While the Indian team management is wary of the fast-tracking Suryavansh, Samson’s continued struggles may force India to reconsider in the coming matches.
Tilak has yet to find top gear
Tilak Varma also attracted attention for his performances in the midfield.
Tilak, one of India’s most talented young batsmen, struggled to pick up speed once spinners were introduced or pacers started playing slower deliveries. His inability to consistently clear the ropes affected India’s finishing ability.
The numbers reflect that concern. In 12 T20 games this year, Tilak has hit just 12 sixes – an average of just one per match – not a great return for a batsman expected to provide firepower in the final innings.
Bowling attack likely to remain unchanged
India are unlikely to change their bowling combination. Old Trafford is expected to provide some help to the spinners, especially the wrist spinners, to make the current attack fit the bill.
Importantly, the best bowling figures recorded in T20Is at the venue belong to India’s Kuldeep Yadav, although the left-arm wrist spinner is not in the current squad.
England rely on explosive batting
England will once again rely on an attacking batting line-up led by captain Harry Brooke. Phil Salt and Tom Banton have provided explosive starts at the top order, while experienced players such as Jos Buttler, Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks have added further depth to the batting order.
Will Sooryavanshi finally get a chance?
While the focus is on the on-field battle, one question still dominates the discussion: Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi make his much-awaited debut?
India have so far resisted the temptation to include the teenager in international cricket, but if Samson’s struggles continue, the calls for the teenager to join him in international cricket are only expected to grow.
