Students who have not cleared the 2026 Assam High School Certificate (HSLC) exam will have to go back to regular Class 10 studies before becoming eligible to sit for the board exam again. The Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB), Division-I, has made re-admission to Class 10 mandatory for unsuccessful candidates, introducing a structured pathway for those planning to make another attempt. The directive was issued through an official notification published by the council on June 23, 2026.
Readmission is mandatory for failed candidates
Under the revised instructions, students who have failed the HSLC Exam 2026 cannot directly register for the next board exam. Instead, they must first secure re-admission to Class 10 and attend regular classes before becoming eligible to appear in subsequent HSLC exams.The move is intended to ensure that students receive continuous academic instruction rather than preparing independently without classroom commitment.
Students can return to their existing school
The notification states that unsuccessful candidates can apply for readmission to the same school from which they appeared for the HSLC 2026 examination.However, recognizing that some schools may be unable to accommodate returning students, the council has also provided an alternative. In such cases, students can enroll in another school operating under the same examination center from which they initially appeared for the HSLC examination.This provision is intended to ensure that no student is denied the opportunity to continue their studies due to institutional limitations.
The registration number remains unchanged
The ASSEB has also clarified that students re-entering Class 10 will not be allotted a new registration number. Instead, they retain the registration number originally issued to them and must use the same registration details while appearing in future HSLC exams. The measure is expected to maintain continuity in student records and exam documentation.
Option to change the selected subject
The board has provided flexibility for readmitted students by allowing them to change their elective subject after re-entering Class 10.However, this option will remain available only until the semester exam. Once the semester exam has been completed, requests to change the elective subject will no longer be accepted.Students who plan to opt for a different elective have therefore been advised to complete the process well before the prescribed deadline.

With the latest notification, ASSEB has established a clear academic framework for students looking for another opportunity after failing the HSLC 2026 exam. The court’s instructions outline the admission process, the continuation of registration records and the provisions for changing subjects, while making reactivation in the classroom an essential requirement before candidates can reappear in future board exams.
