The famous Australian musical “Waitress” has unfortunately been canceled from its Sydney season. The show was originally scheduled to be performed at the Lyric Theater on August 1, 2026. The show was due to end on 19 July 2026 at Her Majesty’s Theater in Melbourne. Adapted from the 2007 screenwriter’s film Adrienne Shirleya musical that premiered in 2016 and features songs written by the Grammy Award winner Sara Bareilles and gained international fame through numerous tours. However, producer John Frost said economic pressures – particularly rising interest rates impacting the cost of living – were the reason they were at their wits end, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.“Sadly, the Sydney season of Waitress will not be going ahead,” the statement read, before adding, “Ticketmaster is actively contacting ticket holders with more information about refunds. We know this is disappointing news and we sincerely thank you for your understanding and continued support.”The show premiered in Brisbane earlier this year before traveling to Melbourne. Waitress the Musical is directed by Diane Paulus and stars Gabriel Thomas, Natalie Bassingthwaite, Rob Mills and Mackenzie Dunn. While an official announcement has yet to be made, the Sydney show date has been removed from its official website.

Australian musicals: A series of cancellations

The cancellation marks the fourth musical to cancel performance dates. Earlier this year, Beetlejuice the Musical was announced to be wrapping up in Sydney, Perth and Adelaide. At the same time, “Back to the Future: The Musical” canceled its national tour in November last year and ended early in Sydney.
