Aditya Dhar’s ‘Dhurandhar’ franchise set a record at the box office, ending its theatrical journey with a global box office collection of over Rs 3,300 crore. The action film starring Ranveer Singh became India’s second-highest-grossing film of all time, behind Aamir Khan’s “Dangal.” While the film’s record currently stands, trade analyst and exhibitor Vishek Chauhan believes Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming epic Ramayana has the potential to surpass it.Chauhan recalled the huge success of ‘Dhurandhar’ and praised its broad commercial appeal for resonating with a diverse audience.“Whenever you make a film that contains every emotion, every element, every genre, you get a fantastic result, like Durandal. It just sits there. It has all the masala ingredients and everything comes together. Dhurandhar is brilliant, brilliant. People say the second part is weaker than the first part, but the second part is classic commercial filmmaking and is several notches above the first part,” he said in an interview with Siddharth Kannan. Praising Aditya Dar’s execution, Chauhan said the film reminded him of the great entertainers of earlier eras.“It was so brilliant. I knew when I saw it that this movie was going to break records, it was going to be a hit. The movie was unstoppable and you never knew when it would stop. It was very emotional. There’s also a sense of satisfaction in killing a villain, and the audience can get catharsis from something like this. “However, while Chauhan admires Durandhar, he believes Ramayana is a film that can set a new benchmark at the box office.“The word-of-mouth has been fantastic and it’s a subject that’s very close to people’s hearts. Ranbir’s look and the star cast of the film – including sonny delYash, the director is also good. So, I have no doubt that this movie will break records. If this movie ever gets off the ground, you’ll find it will break Durand Dahl’s record. The scope of that movie is crazy. People will come to the cinema from all over the world, even from villages,” he said.Chauhan said that as long as it resonates with audiences emotionally, the film has the potential to far exceed traditional box office expectations.“It will work on a different level. It just needs to land right and connect with the audience. Just like Adipurush couldn’t connect with people. It didn’t hit the target. But it still had an amazing opening, around Rs 35 crore in Hindi. So, I feel the sky is the limit for Ramayana. Knitters can continue to pick out VFX and other stuff, and we’ll continue to go about our business. “Ramayana is produced by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios and DNEG Ranbir Kapoor Starring as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi plays Sita, Yash plays Ravana and Sunny Deol plays Hanuman. The film is divided into two parts, the first part is scheduled to release around Diwali on November 6.The mythological epic, which is reported to have a total budget of around Rs 4,000 crore, has already grabbed a lot of attention from the audience, with its first trailer generating a lot of buzz and sparking discussions about its scale, cast and visual effects.
