Senior film producer Mahesh Bhatt has officially ruled out a return to direct a feature film, ending years of speculation about a possible return. Although he briefly returned to direct Sadak 2 in 2020 after spending decades focusing on production, the filmmaker has now made it clear that he has no plans to direct another film.In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, the 77-year-old filmmaker was asked if audiences can expect him to direct again. Bart gave a firm response, saying “no,” before adding, “It’s such a pleasure to be talking so passionately about the movie.” His statement came shortly after the filmmakers Vikram Bhatt Talking about Mahesh Bhatt’s retirement from directing. Although Bart no longer directs feature films, he remains actively involved in the film industry as a producer, screenwriter, and presenter.Reflecting on the evolving landscape of filmmaking, Barthes spoke of the importance of creative freedom and warned against a system in which formula rather than instinct drives art. “Where there’s life, there’s vitality,” he said, before questioning the tendency to create films that follow predetermined molds.“When things are on your terms, you’re cautious. Then, when you’re producing content based on some design that’s been decided on in advance, what’s the role of the artist?” he said.Butt also expressed concern about the industry being increasingly influenced by algorithms and data-driven decisions. Still, he remains optimistic that original voices will continue to challenge the status quo.“There’s always someone out there, someone bold, who’s going to be the new Pied Piper,” he said. During the conversation, Bhatt also praised Imtiaz Ali’s Main Vaapas Aaunga, calling it an important creative milestone. He says the film reflects a much-needed artistic rebellion in an era when storytelling is often influenced by commercial calculations.“I feel like this is a moment of rebellion,” Bart said. He further added, “When you put your heart and soul into it and listen to the heartbeat of the times, you see people’s desire and desire for things that are sensitive and painful about their lives. No matter how dark the night is, there will be traitors, there will be rebels, and they will come and rewrite the story.”Although Mahesh Bhatt has ended his career as a feature film director, he continues to contribute to the industry in other capacities. He was recently announced as the host of “Naam”, which is pitched as a spiritual sequel to his landmark 1986 film of the same name.During his career, Bhatt has directed several critically acclaimed films, including Arth, Saaransh, Naam, Daddy, Aashiqui, Sadak, Zakhm and Duplicate.
