The four-time Emmy nominee, who turns 80 on July 22, told TODAY and PEOPLE that he was diagnosed with the progressive, memory-destroying disease three years ago.“I still haven’t come to terms with it in my heart,” he told People. “There are some moments that you always remember, which proves that you can remember things. There are some moments that I will never forget.”He appeared on the “Today” show and said, “In a sense, I can live with it. I’m sure things will be different and change as it progresses.”

His daughter Mandisa said: “I think it was very important for him to control his own narrative, his own life story. This is really important. The time is now. What better time for him to speak for himself than now? That’s important because people sometimes ask questions and I don’t want to be a dishonest person and say, ‘Oh, yeah, everything’s fine.
