How the FIFA World Cup knockout stages work

The format of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been expanded to 48 teams. After the group stage, 32 teams entered the first knockout round, with the winner advancing to the top 16. From this stage onwards, the competition adopts a direct knockout format – round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals. If a game is tied after 90 minutes, it goes into overtime and, if necessary, a penalty shootout to decide the winner.
