Superman has been a staple of cinema for over four decades, with multiple actors playing the iconic character across different eras and universes. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of the character or a newbie, browsing his filmography can be confusing. According to DC’s official guidelines, the Superman movies don’t follow a universal continuity, which means the best way to watch them is in release order and grouped by the creative era that defined each actor’s portrayal of the character.
The Christopher Reeve Era: Superman (1978) to Superman IV: Road to Peace (1987)
The journey began with the 1978 film Superman, directed by Richard Donner and based on a story by Mario Puzo. It was Superman’s first appearance on the big screen, setting the standard for future superhero movies. Christopher Reeve’s performance introduces the audience to Clark Kent’s origin story and his adoptive parents in Kansas. The film also stars Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor and Marlon Brando as Superman’s biological father, Jor-El.

It was followed by Superman II (1980), which introduced one of the series’ most famous villains, General Zod. In this movie, Superman gives up his powers to be with Lois Lane, only to discover that a hydrogen bomb explosion freed Zod from the Phantom Zone. The director’s cut, known as the Richard Donner Cut, was released in 2006 and is considered by many fans to be the final version.“Superman III” (1983) continued Christopher Reeve’s portrayal of the character. The last film of this era was Superman IV: Path to Peace (1987), in which Superman attempts to rid the world of nuclear weapons. The film marked the end of the Christopher Reeve era, although it is generally considered the weakest of the series.
The Brandon Routh Era: Superman Returns (2006)
After 19 years, Superman returned to theaters in 2006 with “Superman Returns.” Brandon Routh played Superman in Man of Steel, which was a loose continuation of Reeve’s first two films, ignoring the later sequels. The main plot of the film focuses on Superman’s return to Earth after many years of absence and his complicated relationship with Lois Lane.
The Henry Cavill Era: Man of Steel (2013) to Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021)
The 2013 film Man of Steel was the turning point in a new era of Superman on the big screen. Directed by Zack Snyder and starring Henry Cavill, the film presents a fresh, dark, and modern origin story. Unlike the upbeat tone of Reeve’s film, Man of Steel explores themes of isolation and the burden of power.The latest phase begins with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), which pits Superman against Batman over the government’s attempts to regulate their powers. The film also introduced other DC heroes like Wonder Woman and set up events for the larger DC Extended Universe.

Justice League (2017) follows suit, pitting Superman against an alien threat alongside other DC heroes. The film was particularly troubled due to a director switch from Zack Snyder to Joss Whedon mid-production. In 2021, “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” will be released on HBO Max, representing the director’s original vision for the film.
The James Gunn Era: Superman (2025) and beyond
James Gunn is reinventing the DC Universe with a new Superman movie due out in 2025, starring David Corenswet. This marked the beginning of a new era for the character, which included multiple villains such as Engineer and Ultraman.
