Stephen Eustaquio’s dramatic 92nd-minute winner secured a 1-0 win over South Africa, sending the hosts into the last 16 and keeping their hopes of a memorable game at home alive alive.
Canada finished second in Group B with four points. A 6-0 victory over Qatar showed their offensive strength, followed by a 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina, and a narrow 2-1 win over Switzerland to secure qualification. Marsh has built a team that can stay compact while still being aggressive without possession of the ball, and his players have repeatedly accepted the pressure of performing in front of their home fans. Before the game, the Canadian coach acknowledged the expectations, saying: “We know everyone is going to give us a thumbs up and this is an opportunity.”
Morocco comes into the tournament with a stronger World Cup pedigree. After becoming the first African and Arab team to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup in Qatar four years ago, the Atlas Lions once again proved why they are considered one of the strongest defensive teams at the World Cup. Mohamed Wahbi’s advanced side remain unbeaten in Group C after wins over Scotland and Haiti and a 1-1 draw with Brazil.
Their Round of 32 victory was equally dramatic. Morocco recovered from Cody Gakpo’s second-half opener before Issa Diop equalized with a header in the 91st minute of stoppage time before winning 3-2 on penalties, with Ismail Sebari taking the decisive penalty.
Tactical combat promises to be an interesting contrast. Canada will once again rely on the pace of Alphonso Davies, who is fully recovered from injury, along with Jonathan David and the tireless Tani Oluwasei, while Eustaquio continues to dictate play in midfield despite the absence of Ismael Kone with a broken ankle. Morocco fought back with one of the strongest defenses of the tournament, led by goalkeepers Yassine “Bono” Bounu, Achraf Hakimi and Bayern Munich forward Ismail Sebari, whose three World Cup goals underlined his growing influence.
History is good for Morocco. The Atlas Lions have remained undefeated in four previous meetings with Canada, winning three and drawing one, including a 2-1 win in the 2022 World Cup group stage. Statistical models also favored Africa, with the Opta supercomputer giving Morocco a 51.8% chance of regulatory victory compared to Canada’s 21.7%. Yet knockout football rarely follows predictions. The quarterfinals will be played in Boston against either France or Paraguay, a game both countries know could redefine their football history.
