The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, warning of extremely heavy rainfall across the city on Saturday, July 4.In view of the weather conditions, all schools and colleges in Mumbai have been directed to remain closed for the afternoon session on July 4. The decision was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of the students.The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also appealed to residents to stay at home and go out only if absolutely necessary.

Schools and colleges closed as a precaution

According to the IMD, Mumbai is likely to receive heavy rainfall along with gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph during the day.Earlier on Saturday, the city recorded 99 mm of average rainfall during the 24-hour period ending at 8 am. The eastern suburbs received 98mm of rain, while the western suburbs recorded 94mm.

High tide warning issued for Mumbai

The weather department has also warned of high tides, which may worsen waterlogging in low-lying areas. A high tide of 4.26 meters is expected at 2:50 pm on Saturday, followed by another high tide of 3.60 meters at 2:52 am on Sunday. Low tide is expected at 8:56 pm on Saturday and 8:22 am on Sunday.

Authorities are advising residents to stay at home

Authorities have advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and follow official weather updates. Students and parents are also advised to stay in touch with their respective schools and colleges for any additional announcements regarding classes.
