actor Raveena Tandon Shares her views on how female characters are portrayed in Bollywood comedies today. Looking back on her journey in the genre, she says women are no longer accepting the kind of comic roles that were once common in Hindi films.The actress believes there has been a definite shift in the way female characters are portrayed. She believes that today’s actresses should have more opportunities to showcase their comedic talents through well-crafted roles.
Tribute to Raveena Tandon Sridevi comedy talent
In an interaction with PTI, Raveena spoke about actresses who influenced her and set high standards for comedy acting. She singled out Sridevi, calling her one of the greatest examples of a heroine who excelled in comic roles while maintaining her screen presence. She said: “Everything she did in Mr India, the entire Hawai’i series, Charlie Chaplin’s performances and Chael Baz was pure genius. She proved that a mainstream, gorgeous leading lady could contort her face, be totally goofy, slapstick and still look absolutely mesmerizing.”Apart from Sridevi, Raveena also praised Juhi Chawla For her comedic timing. She misses the legendary actress fondly Bali Gita and Madhubala, praised for bringing intelligence, charm and spontaneity to comedy films.Sharing her observations on today’s filmmaking, Raveena said comedy films have evolved into bigger and more structured works. As a result, she feels that female-centric comedic moments gradually become less prominent. She explains: “The space has changed and, frankly, we’ve lost some of the organic playground that we had in the ’90s. Today, comedy movies have become highly structured and highly plot-driven, or they’re huge monoliths. In the process, the heroine’s comic trajectory shrinks. ” The actress said that unlike many films of previous decades, changing storytelling styles had reduced the scope for women to develop their own sense of humor independently.
Raveena Tandon calls for writing better female characters
The “Welcome to the Jungle” actress also believes that given stronger material, today’s actresses are more than capable of delivering memorable comedic performances. She believes the problem lies with the way many female characters are written, rather than the performers themselves. She said: “Girls today are very sharp, graceful and have great timing, but scripts often limit them to charming catalyst roles rather than full-fledged comedic dynamics. We need writers to consciously create female protagonists who are flawed, messed up, and downright hilarious without worrying about making them look perfect or politically correct all the time. “
