Samantha Ruth Prabhu on how movies reduce women to spectacle
Speaking about her recent film Maa Inti Bangaaram in an interview, Samantha shared, “What appealed to me about the story is that I didn’t see it as breaking genre or trying to make a statement. I thought it was a compelling character with real depth and there was a lot of scope for it to be entertaining, which I feel is really rare, especially for women in the film industry. Also, I don’t think action scenes are really spectacles, and I think it’s time we stop putting women in cinemas just for the spectacle, just for the dance or the song or the role, just for the spectacle.“She further added, “I think audiences have changed; they are more open to fresh stories and no longer ask if the hero is male or female. They just want to be entertained; they want to be moved. If a character is written honestly and the story connects, people will accept it and I believe this is the direction mainstream cinema is heading and I’m happy to be a part of this journey.”
