Actor-filmmaker R Madhavan says receiving the Padma Shri has added a new sense of responsibility to his career even as he is basking in the success of “Durandhar”, one of the most talked-about films of the year.In a recent interview with DD News, the actor reflected on the significance of receiving this prestigious civilian award and how it changed his perspective on his work.“This award made me realize that it comes with responsibility. There is prestige but there is also responsibility. It feels like everything I have done so far is just the beginning. People expect more from me now and I have to hold myself to a higher standard than before,” Madhavan said. The actor admits that Padma Shri now occasionally affects his thought process while choosing films.“While choosing a role, I first ask if it suits my personality and is suitable for my job. Later in the process, I think of whether a Padma Shri recipient should do a particular role,” he shares.
Durandal works because everyone believes the story
Madhavan also spoke about Durandal’s amazing response, saying the film’s success stemmed from the team’s collective commitment to telling an important story rather than chasing commercial gains.“I have always believed that when a film is backed by solid research and made out of a genuine desire to tell an important story – not just to make money – it will never be ordinary,” he said.According to the actor, every member of the crew put a lot of effort into this project.“In the case of Durandhar, every actor and technician was invested so much in the project. It was difficult to separate the characters from the performers because everyone was so committed,” explains Madhavan. He further said that the film’s depiction of a progressive and powerful India resonated strongly with audiences, especially young audiences.“The film tells the story of a progressive, advanced and strong India. When such stories are told honestly, people resonate. Young audiences feel proud after coming to cinemas and watching the film,” he said.
“This movie must win”
Looking back on his career choices, Madhavan stresses that he never took up any project just to make his characters stand out.“My responsibility is to give my all to the role. I never go into a movie thinking that my character should be the one the audience remembers the most. To me, that’s a greedy approach because it doesn’t help the movie,” he said. The actor added that the success of the overall project remains more important than individual praise.“Personal appreciation means nothing if the film doesn’t work. Ultimately, the film has to win,” concluded Madhavan.
